Forest landowners in the Pacific Northwest own and manage the most productive forests in the world. These forests provide countless benefits including jobs, forest products, clean air and water, conservation of biological diversity, maintenance of climate, outdoor recreation, and scenic landscapes. However, private landowners still face difficult times with rising real estate values and mediocre timber prices. These factors are making it increasingly difficult for landowners to afford to maintain undeveloped, forested land.
Fortunately, many opportunities exist to generate revenue from timber activities as well as potential for income or tax savings from conserving land or selling environmental services. Managing forests for ecological diversity can translate to economic diversity because unique products from these forests command a premium price in the marketplace. This afternoon workshop will explore some potential options that forest landowners can use to increase revenue from forestland, while decreasing management costs and protecting conservation values. Workshop is appropriate for forests of 20-10,000 acres.
Topics will include:
• FSC certification & markets
• Selling “carbon credits”
• Conservation easements
• Conservation & financial assistance programs
