SEATTLE – The Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Northwest Natural Resource Group are announcing an innovative public-private partnership for collaboration and innovation in outreach to small forest landowners. Small forest landowners own one quarter of all forests in Washington State, and development pressure continues to encroach upon natural resource lands, making them harder to maintain. The need for innovative tools and assistance that keep these lands viable has never been greater. Landowners and rural communities need new economic opportunities, and forests across the state need improved health and resilience to maintain clean water, resist catastrophic forest fires, and adapt to climate change. Landowners getting win for environment and pocketbook
MCKENNA – When Bill and Karen Lane bought 20 acres of forested land in the McKenna Forest Reserve near Yelm, WA, it was for their retirement home, but it has also proved to be a source of income as they harvested one-third of their trees in an ecologically-based commercial thinning operation this winter with help from Northwest Certified Forestry. Many landowners have performed similar harvests with NCF and have worked with the program to restore and diversify their forests.
Forest owners to learn how to cut and yard own logs; retain more profit
YELM – Owning private woodlands has the potential for profitable harvests of trees, but hiring a contractor to cut and haul them can be expensive. Northwest Certified Forestry, a service organization for small woodland owners, will be putting on a training workshop on June 9 in a forest near Yelm to show forest owners how to do their own logging by selecting, cutting and yarding trees themselves.
NNRG Receives Funding to Develop Forest Monitoring Protocol
NNRG was recently awarded funding from the US Department of Agriculture Conservation Innovations Grant program and The Mountaineers Foundation to begin development of an ecological monitoring tool designed to make emerging ecosystem service markets more accessible to small forest landowners in the Pacific Northwest.
Recent Ice Storm Tax Saving Opportunities for Small Woodland Owners
It hasn’t been since 1996 that Western Washington timberland owners experienced the havoc of heavy snow and ice storms. The recent storm has resulted in much damaged and destroyed timber. The income tax rules do provide some relief in the form of a timber casualty loss deduction for affected landowners.

The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) is compiling a list of interested suppliers of Large Woody Debris (LWD), logs with and without root wads, from sustainably harvested land base (FSC® certified or similar) for stream and river restoration projects.
